And that’s the real crux of the matter, in my mind, anyways. With the crunched amount of “free” time that we have between work and 24/7 parenting, how would my husband ever want to spend time with another woman besides me?
I’ve heard of couples who have friends of the opposite sex, although I don’t personally know of any who have made it work. In “The Secret Lives of Wives,” author Iris Krasnow details how she simply couldn’t make her marriage work without her male best friend — and that her husband values their friendship almost more than she does, literally shooing her out the door to spend time with him. Other celebrity wives, like Mary J. Blige, and Naya Rivera subscribe to my belief — that at best, having a friend of the opposite sex is disrespectful, and at worst, it’s just a terrible idea that is just begging for trouble.
In my mind, I truthfully would be upset if I found out that my husband was spending time outside of work hours hanging out with another woman — but if I’m being totally honest, it may just be that his free time would be the real mistress, not the fact that he was spending time with another woman. Because in our world, four kids + careers = no free time. If we can’t even find time to squeeze in a date night, it would definitely be a troubling sign if he was off spending time with anyone else besides me. And then there is some startling evidence that the close proximity of harmless workplace friendships can lead to extramarital affairs.
Bottom line, if you have time to spend with another man or woman outside of work besides your spouse, then I think your time could be better spent.
